DX-Pedition to JP51/JP43/JP44
The destination for this years VHF DX-Pedition was chosen to be the island of
Linesøya, located somewhat north-west from Trondheim. It is a lengthy 660 km
ride (almost no highways!) from Oslo. Uli DK2BJ had been there last year, but
left with some ambitions unfulfilled. This year we got additional support from
Norbert DK5WO, and also Roland DL2OM wanted to join us for some days. On the
way we activated also JP51BP (mainly DK2BJ and DK5WO).
For accommodation on Linesøya we rented an old farmhouse at the southern tip
of the island in JP43WX. It had not a very good take-off but enough space to
sleep 7 adults and my little daughter (family tour!).
After arrival we needed all hands for setting up 6m and 4m stations in two
locations, because we wanted to participate in the IARU-R1 50/70 MHz Contest.
The first station was set up at the house with LPDA for 6m and 4m. The second
station was established in JP44XA at 2 km distance from the house. Roland DL2OM
set up his station for the contest at a third site, in JP44WA.
A bit later the 2m station was established in the car on a nearby hilltop,
for better take-off. After 2-3 days of operation from JP43WX the 2m station was
moved to the other site in JP44XA, the square we expected to be on higher demand.
Towards the end of our stay I moved the 2m station back to JP43WX, to satisfy a
few guys who missed the first operation.

Due to the ambitious goal of activating two squares on three bands each and
combining this with family we had to be very focussed. Norbert DK5WO operated
from JP43WX on 6m and 4m, Uli DK2BJ on 6m and 4m from JP44XA and I limited
myself to 2m from both JP43WX and JP44XA (station moved between locations). And
we managed to do a couple of family activities as well, once the weather became
a bit more friendly. During the first days on Linesøya we had some rain and high
winds, requiring to safeguard some antennas.
On two occasions I operated also on 6m and 4m via Es from JP44XA, when other
operator were not available. At the beginning of our activity we missed at
least two good Es openings, due to travel and restaurant. There was perhaps a
slight chance of Es even on 2m during these openings. We nevertheless caught
several good Es openings and made many hundred contacts on 6m, and ca 100 on
4m. Maximum distance on 6m was > 3000 km with CT1EMX, CT1EPS and others.
All MS contacts on 2m were made in FSK, operating more or less random. The
reflections were generally not very good, except for some hours. The distance
to the central and southern parts of Europe was already quite large so this
obviously limited the amount of stations we could work. The fact that we could
work 600 km on tropo proved that our horizon was pretty good.
